Setting up your Team eBird Account

Team Captains - Please read this important information!!

To log your bird sightings as a team on Global Big Day, please follow the following steps:

Team Captains

  1. Create an eBird Team Account
    1. Go to the eBird account creation page
    2. Enter team name as first name (e.g., Birdlife), and last name as “Team" (full name being Birdlife Team in this case)
    3. Enter full name without spaces for your username (e.g., BirdlifeTeam)
    4. NOTE: If you already have another account for your email address, after confirming username/password be sure to choose “I want to create another account”, and “YES” for “are you sure?"
    5. On Preferences, choose the "Data privacy” user preference to "Hide my data from the Top 100”
    6. We recommend using one internet browser to log into your Team Account, and one to log into your personal eBird account
  2. Share participation instructions with team members
    1. Team members should go out on 8 May, tally birds they find, and report a list of sightings from each specific location that they went birding at. Learn how to report sightings.
    2. Team members should report sightings on their individual accounts, and share their eBird checklist with the Team Account. To share, each team member should go to their list of checklists, tap ‘Share’, and enter the Team Account username (e.g., BirdlifeTeam) to send Shared Checklists to the group bird list.
  3. As Team Captain, accept Shared Checklists to increase your bird list
    1. As Team Captain, go into the Team Account and ‘Accept’ the checklists that are visible on My eBird.
      1. PRO TIP: you can also go to “Contacts” in eBird (available by tapping your username in the upper right of any page on eBird), and set your Team Members as Friends, using their usernames. This will make them automatically copy the shared checklists into your account, without you having to manually tick ‘Accept’ for each one.
  4. Share your team page for friends to follow your progress
    1. When logged in on your Team Account, go to ebird.org/profile (also available by tapping your username in the upper right of any page on eBird).
    2. Click the button to “Set up your profile”, making it public. The link at the top of the page can now be shared, and anyone logged into eBird can see your species tallies as a team, and where in the world your team has birded.

A Few Reminders for Everyone

Here are a few reminders for everyone, whether you have registered as an Individual or a Team.  Please take a few minutes to do your own checklist so you are ready for Global Big Day!

Safety

This is our number one priority.  We want everyone to enjoy Global Big Day while remaining safe at all times.  Please ensure when taking part you comply with any local rules  regarding access to locations and any Covid-19 restrictions.

Please respect your fellow citizens and the environment.

Fund Raising

Please try to help us with some fundraising if you can.  However much you can afford or raise, all funds count and we are incredibly grateful to those of you who have already donated.  We understand that times are particularly difficult at the moment.

Please remember that for this event our conservation project is supporting BirdLife International’s Campaign to PROTECT MIGRATING BIRDS.  The ILLEGAL KILLING of migrating birds is something which we all would like to see ended.

If you are able to donate please watch out for details from April 1st.

Social Media

Please:

eBird for Individuals

Please make sure you have your eBird account ready for the Big Day!

If you need to open an eBird Account, please go to https://ebird.org/home to sign up and make sure you are familiar with how to use eBird before Global Big Day!

Question: Is there a time limit on submitting lists to eBird so they count towards Global Bird Weekend?

Answer: Ideally, submit your list on Saturday 8 May - Global Big Day! - eBird can then produce a real time daily total and give information about how many people are out listing for the event as it happens! You can watch the lists roll in on eBird’s Global Big Day page.  The number of species submitted will be updated every few minutes throughout the day.

Please contact us on info@globalbirding.org if you have any questions.

TEAM REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Please encourage all your team members to register as individuals on our website  https://globalbirding.org/individual-registration

TEAM FUNDRAISING

This will be open on April 1st.

EBIRD TEAM ACCOUNT

Have you managed to set up your eBird Team account? There are instructions for this on our website https://globalbirding.org/ebird-team-information

Hopefully we can answer a couple of questions about this here:

Question: Does EVERYONE on the team have to submit their own individual list to eBird as well as the complete group or team list?

Answer: Ideally, YES! Once everyone has got their own lists, then each team member submits their lists individually AND then shares their lists to their Team Leader who submits the complete Team List to eBird.

If someone on your team doesn’t have eBird or the suitable equipment to upload their lists, then they can communicate what they have seen to their Team Leader who can add their sightings manually on the Team Leader eBird account.

Question: Is there a time limit on submitting lists to eBird so they count towards Global Big Day?

Answer: Ideally, submit your lists on Saturday 8 May! - eBird can then produce a real time daily rolling total of species recorded and show how many people are out listing for the event as it happens! You can watch the lists roll in on eBird’s Global Big Day page.  The number of species submitted will be updated every few minutes throughout the day.

ABOVE ALL HAVE A GREAT FUN GLOBAL BIG DAY!!!
